Why Do Anything

Shouldn’t Wizards be in charge of a story archive?

In theory, yeah. Then there’s Spelltable. And Gatherer. The Mothership’s own article archives. The business is, to lightly paraphrase the Planeswalker Feroz, just following its nature.

There are plenty of reasons why Wizards would opt not to: No direct revenue, low relative interest, editorial standards of older materials, storage, project cost, maintenance, incomplete historical credits, digital publishing rights, the list goes on. If a handful of easier problems from the above weren’t solved to rerelease the original Lorwyn-Shadowmoor trilogy as ebooks in time for Lorwyn Eclipsed and rake in a sweet couple hundred from digital sales, then I have to assume any grander pitch with no return is dead on arrival.

So not them, but why me? This is where I take a few stabs at a genuine answer for once.

It’s what I wanted when I was jumping in. I remember complaining to Mike about the references on wiki pages and simply wanting a reading list for each topic. The Mothership had Planeswalker profile pages back in 2016 with the capability to track story appearances (I assume via article tagging), but it was rarely used. Meanwhile, Berend at Multiverse in Review was dragging everyone into a story-sourcing renaissance because he wanted the challenge of untangling everything. Those are the direct influences for the story search.

It’s also my community service. As prescient as I may have been in jumping the story ship around Guilds of Ravnica, I took a very lazy path and went cynical fast, eventually culminating in The Splinter Bin. Any decent comedy bits or followers gained didn’t make up for how soul-sucking my relationship to the game had become. After almost assuredly having made things tougher for no good reason, why not course correct and go hard again on something positive.

It’s also also a damn good hobby. There’s no way to estimate the time spent on my site (half because I abandoned it a few times between 2020 and 2023, half because I don’t care to) but I’ve warped it into this perfectly impossible hill to climb. Progress is saved, the to-do list gets refilled only when I feel like it, there’s always more to catalog, I technically owe it to nobody, and, if nothing else, I’m reading.

Still, at the end of the day, money is the only reason we do anything. Interested parties can submit offers to purchase this site via MTGO trade request to username “Vronos”. Offers below 1.75 million tix will not be considered.
