It Makes Me [Sic]

The first two words of the Zendikar block novel are nearly impossible to forget: Nissa Revine.

Of the five instances where Nissa’s full name is used in the book, three are spelled Revine while the other two are Revane. The epilogue also lists the incorrect version, bookending Nissa’s debut story as a draft that—by all outward appearances—miraculously avoided the eyes of a proofreader. Surely, even the lowest effort skim would hit the first and last pages, regardless of whether the character’s name had changed within R&D.

At the end of the day, though, In the Teeth of Akoum is merely the eye-catching outlier. Magic has maintained thousands of storied proper nouns with remarkably few name discrepancies. And as Magic players eternally outnumber story readers, errors that are part of accompanying fiction aren’t remotely as memorable nor memeable as those printed on the cards themselves. Glory be to the original Monarch token.

Still, I’ve spent years tracking elements from Magic’s story for this site’s primary function. I would never forsake my trivial duty of presenting an initial collection of misspellings. I’m certain that many have slipped past me (which should indicate the precise level of unimportance these hold), but the list will surely grow with rereads.

To depart, below is the introduction given by the defiant Sorine Relicbane. Perhaps he misremembered in the moment or wanted to try something new. Just please don’t call him that.

“I abandoned that name years ago. That is a machine maker’s name. Call me Sorine Relicsbane [sic]. I am Arcum’s pet heretic, the dissenter he keeps in the ranks to allow him to think of himself as pure and selfless.”
