The Tarkir: Dragonstorm Story Quick-Start Guide

This article is intended for readers who are brand new to the story side of Magic and want to begin reading with the set Tarkir: Dragonstorm. These are the essentials you need to know.

The Basics

The Multiverse of Magic is made up of individual worlds separated from each other, called planes. These planes have a variety of different inhabitants, environments, creatures, and magics. The planes are the settings of the stories.

Most characters don’t have the ability to leave their plane and travel to another at a moment’s notice. There are portals that appear somewhat randomly connecting worlds, called omenpaths, however these portals aren’t guaranteed to stay open nor will they deliver you exactly where you want to go if they have not been stable enough to be explored.

That is where the Planeswalker Spark comes in. Some beings in the Multiverse are born with a magical gift called a Spark which can be “ignited”—usually by a major life event—to make them into a Planeswalker. Once they are a Planeswalker, they are able to planeswalk, transporting themselves directly across the Multiverse to wherever they desire.

Recently, a number of Planeswalkers mysteriously lost their Sparks. The full cause and method by which they lost them is not known, only speculated. This leaves the desparked former Planeswalkers to be reliant on omenpaths for interplanar travel.

Tarkir: Dragonstorm Premise

The story of Tarkir : Dragonstorm is set on the plane of Tarkir, a world filled with dragons and ruled by five different clans. The clans have recently defeated the dragonlords to reclaim control over and restore their respective factions.

Across the Multiverse, however, Tarkir’s unique dragonstorm magic has been mixing with omenpaths, delivering wild dragons and chaos to planes ill-prepared for such assaults. The angel Planeswalker Elspeth Tirel has attempted to mitigate the damage to other planes, but the time has come for her and the former Planeswalker Narset to stop this interplanar issue at its source.

Returning Characters of Tarkir Dragonstorm

Narset – Narset is a human monk and a former Planeswalker from the plane of Tarkir. She is the current waymaster of the Jeskai, one of the five clans that rule the plane. Seeking a way to end the perpetual wars waged on the plane, Narset’s discovery of the Stormnexus Ritual ultimately led to the revitalization of the clans and, unexpectedly, the defeat of the dragonlords.

Elspeth Tirel – Elspeth is an archangel Planeswalker from the plane of Capenna. After reports of dragonstorms across the Multiverse and intervening in one herself to defend Avishkar, she has arrived on Tarkir to investigate further.

Sarkhan Vol – Sarkhan is a human druid and former Planeswalker from the plane of Tarkir. He originated from an alternate version of the plane of Tarkir that was without dragons. After time traveling a thousand years into the past to save Ugin and dragonkind from death, his home version of Tarkir was erased and overwritten.

Ajani Goldmane – Ajani is a leonin warrior and Planeswalker from the plane of Naya, now part of Alara. Though he was corrupted against his will during a recent interplanar war, he was recovered. Ajani’s whereabouts in the time since have been unknown.

Ugin – Ugin is an elder dragon and Planeswalker from the plane of Dominaria. Ugin has a unique relationship with Tarkir and his presence is magically linked to the storms that spawn dragons across the plane. His whereabouts have been unknown, though assumed to be the Meditation Plane acting as warden for his imprisoned brother.

Loot – Loot is a small creature with a relatively unknown history. He has mental access to a live map of the Multiverse, including omenpaths—the portals between worlds.

Jace Beleren and Vraska – Jace is a telepath and mind mage Planeswalker from a plane called Vryn. Vraska is a gorgon assassin and former Planeswalker from a plane called Ravnica. After seeing the horrors of a recent interplanar war, Jace and Vraska are on a quest to reshape the Multiverse to stop emerging interplanar threats that would wreak havoc.
