Beckett Brass is the steady leader of the pirates of the Brazen Coalition. A charismatic captain, Brass has styled herself now as Governor of the Coalition, uniting the disparate fleets under a single banner with the floating city of High and Dry as the Coalition’s capital.

As Governor, Brass was ambitious, aiming to build a union of pirate fleets and islands into something greater: no longer would they just be a coalition of fleets, but a nation, a state capable of contesting the great powers of Ixalan. The open seas were only free if you could outsail the Legion’s military, and land only safe if you could avoid the Sun Empire. Divided, the pirates of the Brazen Coalition were nothing more than criminals. United, they could be a mighty force.

The Phyrexian invasion shattered this dream. High and Dry fell to sleeper agents and phyresis, and Brass was driven from her office with only a single ship, her beloved Indomitable, and its surviving crew. Nevertheless, Brass and her crew fought for their dream and survived to see the Phyrexians defeated. In the wake of the invasion and seeking a path back to her previous plans, Brass returned her crew to Ixalan, following rumors of great wealth and power hidden below the surface of the world…

Clavileño is the true believer’s true believer, a killer who sees himself as a mortal tool to be used for immortal designs. A cleric most comfortable in the field, surrounded by enemies of the faith, Clavileño was the first follower of Vito and a fast zealot for the Antifex, Vona de Illado.

The queen’s court in Alta Torrezon filled with concerned murmurs. The high holy cathedral of the Church of Dusk resounded with condemnations of the heretics. Clavileño heard none of that consternation and instead his head is filled only with contempt and holy fury. While the Phyrexians butchered the Free Cities of the West, the Queen had ordered Clavileño and other paladins to hold their swords. When famine swept through Alta Torrezon, the Queen ordered Clavileño to turn his blade on vampires. Disgusted and starving, Clavileño found purpose in his own blood fast: to venture west and cross the ocean. Living there was believed to be someone of true faith, who seeks to return order, glory, and purity to Torrezon. Clavileño followed that revelation, and has found himself among the ranks of the devoted—derided as heretics by the crown and the church—following Vito below Ixalan’s surface where their true god, Aclazotz, awaits his most chosen faithful with gifts and revelations.

Hakbal is an aqualogist, a spellcaster, and scientist, who studies the movements of currents, advances of erosion, and intricacies of fluid dynamics. He uses this knowledge to inform his magic, guide his allies, confound his enemies, and shape water itself into a weapon more powerful than steel.

A leader among the vanguard of the River Heralds exploration corps below Ixalan’s surface, Hakbal was one of the first to delve into the depths and is most familiar with the hazards and curiosities of the world’s caverns. During the Invasion, the River Heralds fought a valiant but prudent defensive campaign. Unable to defeat the invaders on the field, they elected to seek ancient paths underground, where the vastness darkness would provide countless places for the Heralds to hide. Hakbal, using his magic and wits, led the first group down into the dark caverns, guiding them away from danger and toward wonder. Others followed his lead, and the Heralds found safety underground, avoiding the worst of the Invasion and preserving Ixalan’s long memory from the Phyrexians’ grasp.

Pantlaza, Sun-Favored

Pantlaza is Huatli’s dinosaur companion, and as equal in stature to other dinosaurs as the warrior-poet is to the soldiers and citizens of the Sun Empire. Loyal and intelligent, Pantlaza chose Huatli as a packmate, coming to her after the opening or Orazca to pledge his service and loyalty. Unlike other companions she’s had, Huatli doesn’t control Pantlaza; instead, they work together as equals to lead humans and dinosaurs in battle and toward peace.

During the Phyrexian invasion, Pantlaza performed alongside Huatli’s company of lancers with his own company of raptors, acting as a vanguard to harry, flank, and disrupt Phyrexian columns. Pantlaza is infamously independent, a trait he brought to his partnership with Huatli. A quick and canny leader of dinosaurs, Pantlaza works his best with other agile dinosaurs as scouts and rangers on long-range missions, independent of any human handling.
