Jiang Yanggu wanders the world accompanied by his faithful companion, Mowu, searching for clues to a past he can’t remember. Mu Yanling, an enigmatic storm mage, remembers her tragic past all too clearly but will never give up hope of saving those she loves. When their paths collide on a sacred magical mountain, they realize they both may be caught up in a greater mystery than they ever imagined.

Each of the included decks was designed for Magic™ players in China and features new cards and characters created by Chinese writers, artists, and folklorists. The Global Series shares diverse expressions of Magic with players around the world.

Mu Yanling

Amid the sounds of roaring beasts, a crushing wave devoured Mu Yanling’s village when she was a child, and she barely escaped with her life. By pure chance, a wanderer named Li Shan was nearby. He saved Mu Yanling and took her in. He raised the girl as family after she lost her own, and his courage always made her feel safe. As they wandered together, she grew stronger, and resolved to be ready if another calamity struck.

One day, while Li Shan and Mu Yanling were travelining to visit the clan of Cloud Dream Lake, Li Shan suddenly collapsed. He was dead before Yanling could react. Paralyzed with grief, she could do nothing but hold his body and weep until she lost consciousness. But when she awoke, his body was gone! In spite of her sorrow and confusion, a spark of hope was kindled—was it possible he wasn’t really dead?

Yanling set off to search every corner of the world for some trace of her beloved mentor, from the Eternal Divided Realm in the south to the Dark Sea of Penglai in the north. She even ventured to the mysterious Ten Wizards Mountain seeking the secrets of time magic that might undo the tragedies of her life. She will not give up her search until she finds the truth of what happened to Li Shan, whether he is alive or dead.

About the Global Series

Magic: The Gathering® is played all around the world. While that usually means we translate the stories and cards we create here in the United States into many other languages, we decided to do something different this time. We brought together a team of Chinese artists, writers, and folklorists to craft a brand-new branch of Magic­™ story, rooted in Chinese aesthetics and mythology, culminating in these two decks. And although they were originally designed for release only in China, we made a few available in English to share Mu Yanling and Jiang Yanggu’s stories—and the cards and art they inspired—with you!

Jiang Yanggu

He can’t remember his name, his past, his family—or if he even has a family. He decided to call himself Yanggu, meaning “the valley where sun rises,” after the first place he can remember: the Easternmost Valley. Following his loyal hound, Mowu, Yanggu traveled until he came to the village of the powerful Jiuli Clan, Finally, Yanggu felt a sense of peace, and he settled in to live among the tribe. He even made friends with another teenager, a fire dancer named Chiyou.

But a strange plague swept through the village. Even the Jiuli Clan’s power could not stop it, and soon the fate of the whole tribe hung in the balance. Yanggu realized that the disease was caused by contamination in the water supply. Desperate to save his newfound home, he ventured to the mysterious Ten Wizards Mountain in search of a fabled healing elixir. There he found traps set by a mysterious, mischievous woman with magical powers he’d never seen before. After a few skirmishes, they began to talk, and eventually began to trust each other.

The mysterious woman possessed great power over water, and with her help, Yanggu was able to purify the Jiuli Clan’s water supply and save the village. The grateful villagers asked him to take over as chieftain, but Yanggu declined. He decided to travel onward with the water mage and keep searching for the truth about his past.
