Magic Duels: Eldritch Moon Screen 1

The scholar Tamiyo has followed a trail of strange tales, ultimately discovering a ring of twisted stones beneath a churning sky. The ring is fractured in places. Someone—or something—huge has recently passed through here. Behind her, she senses the movement of dark, humanoid shapes rising from the sea’s water.

The light of Tamiyo’s lantern reveals the fallen forms of the Drownyard cultists. Their distorted faces are nothing more than swarms of tentacles, their limbs warped and distended. What force has wrought these grotesque changes? Looking up, the pale moonlight illuminates the distant, hulking silhouette of the Eldrazi titan Emrakul as she drifts over Innistrad.

The necromancer Liliana Vess seethes as intruders shatter the placid calm of her manor. The invading werewolves should know better than to dare fight their way onto the powerful mage’s premises. But these werewolves are different—unnaturally reckless, stronger, and hideously deformed. Liliana quietly promises swift vengeance upon whatever has brought them here.

Outside of her manor, Liliana spies Emrakul drifting slowly towards the town of Thraben, madness swirling in the titan’s wake. Liliana resolutely raises an army of zombies to march with her. She will not allow this offense to go unpunished.

Emrakul drifts into Thraben, her passage through Innistrad leaving life warped and mutated in her wake. Thousands of warped cultists and mutated creatures follow her into the city, drawn like moths to flame. Between these transformed horrors and the titan stand the Gatewatch, who have arrived at Thraben’s entrance.

With a growing sense of horror, the Planeswalkers realize force alone is unable to match the hordes of transformed villagers. Jace’s ability to shield the minds of the others from the encroaching madness is starting to falter. Soon the Gatewatch is overrun, and still they haven’t located Emrakul herself. All seems lost.

Desperate for assistance, the Gatewatch attempt to contact Odric, the head of the town’s council. But the townspeople have devolved into a frenzied mob. Many have unexpectedly transformed into Eldrazi monsters. Odric tries to lead, but the lines between friend and foe have blurred. Amidst the chaos of battle, heal arrived bathed in violet light and leading an oncoming tide of undead—the necromancer Liliana Vess.

The Eldrazi onslaught is fierce, and waves of ghouls fall to their attacks. But Liliana’s magic, bolstered by the power of the Chain Veil, raises yet more allies from the fallen. Gideon Jura finds himself fighting back-to-back with an unlikely, but needed, ally. The Eldrazi are driven back.

Fighting their way outside the city, the Gatewatch finally reaches Emrakul. The Eldrazi titan looms over them, gibbering masses of Eldrazi horrors clustered beneath her. Liliana and Jace lead the necromancer’s undead army in a frontal assault, while the other Planeswalkers prepare their own powerful spells.

As Avacyn stated long ago, “What cannot be destroyed will be bound.” Tamiyo and Nissa combine their powers, using Innistrad’s mystical moon to bind Emrakul herself. Nissa inscribes her glyph onto the lunar surface while Tamiyo’s potent binding magic pulls the titan into the imprinted moon.

With the binding of Emrakul, the remaining Eldrazi horrors scatter. Exhausted by the toll of the Chain Veil, Liliana finally allows herself to release her undead army to the slumber of death. She has seen the power wielded by the other Planeswalkers, perhaps a power strong enough to free her from the Chain Veil’s curse. She gives her oath to the Gatewatch, and now five Planeswalkers stand together to protect the Multiverse.
